Spirumbrella: Spirumbrella is the beginning of a series exploring the umbrellla, the topic I pursued for my thesis work. The original goal behind the Spirumbrella was to make an umbrella that could fly like a wooden helicopter stick, or at least appear to be capable of flight like Da Vinci’s helicopter. I built a quick mock-up of the shape, after which I concluded that the umbrella should open in a spiral motion. That was a mechanical challenge that required great amount of testing. The final design was inspired by the way umbrellas are also used as canes. See a short youtube clip here.
